The Gelati Monastery (near Kutaisi) was founded in 1106 by David IV 'The Builder', King of Georgia at the time. It remained for a long time one of the main cultural and enlightening centers in old Georgia. One of the greatest Georgian kings, David the Builder is buried her in Gelati church.In 1994, Gelati Monastery was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The site was included in the 2008 World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites by the World Monuments Fund to draw attention to deterioration caused by prolonged neglect.
