Sea Horse swimming in the water on green background - Fotografía de stock
Seahorses (genus Hippocampus) constitute a group of sea fish belonging to the Syngnathidae family, which also includes pipa fish.
The body of the seahorses is covered by an armour of plates or rings of bone formation. Their way of swimming is very different from that of the other fish, as well as the characteristic of having the body at right angles with the head, fact that it is not given in any other known genus of fish. They adopt an upright position, impulsándose with their dorsal fin. The vertical displacement is achieved by adjusting the air volume of the tumble bladders and by means of the pectoral fins. The fins are very dim and fan-shaped. The dorsal pushes the horizontal displacement, stirring it about three and a half times per second. They do not have an anus fin, instead they have a prehensile tail, which is coiled and allows them to cling to corals and underwater plants.
