Firework Finale Completes Whitby Regatta Weekend

At over 170 years old the Whitby Regatta is thought to be the oldest sea regatta on the northeast coast of England and draws thousands of visitors each year. Originally held as a competition between local fishermen who raced in their fishing smacks and salmon cobbles it grew into a yachting race. Due to the high costs involved with the yachts it became in 1872 more of a competitive rowing event. The present three-day long regatta continues to hold rowing events throughout the weekend but now also features a range of activities and events to entertain crowds including a greasy pole competition, raft races, aerobatic displays, a fairground, a float parade as well as events such as glamorous granny, bonny baby competition and a market and craft fair and culminates with a grand finale firework display on the final day.
