The Truth About The North Pole

A production still from 'The Truth About the North Pole', a 1911 short, silent film, made in Chicago, starring American explorer Frederick Cook (1865 - 1940, right) and purporting to be a reconstruction of his expedition to the North Pole in 1909. Cook's claim to have been the first person to reach the North Pole was controversial because it was disputed both by his former employer (and rival claimant) Robert Peary, as well by as his Eskimo companions, who claimed he had stopped short, hundreds of miles from the North Pole.
