ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA: US soldiers arrest 30 October 1983 suspected Marxist activist in St George's, the capital of the Grenada Island, three days after US troops, including 800 Marines, invaded the island 27 October, ousting the Marxist government. The US action came after the island's Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop was killed. US President Ronald Reagan has given several reasons for attacking, from the construction of a new airport which could be used for military jets, to the protection of American living in Grenada. Another motive was to send a message to other small Latin American countries that the US will not tolerate Marxism in its backyard.
