Today Catalonia celebrates its traditional Diada and one of its traditional acts are the offerings of institutions, parties and unions to the monument of Rafael Casanova early in the morning. The figure of Rafael Casanova was recovered in Catalonia during the Reinaxença period as a symbol of the region's freedoms. Since then, Casanova has been praised by Catalan nationalism as the hero of the Barcelona resistance against the Bourbon troops of Philip V who defended the Catalan institutions until the end.
