UNALASKA, UNITED STATES: This 13 December, 2004 US Coast Guard image shows the two halves of the wrecked Malaysian freighter Selendang Ayu near Unalaska Island, Alaska. The 222-meter (738-foot) Selendang Ayu ran aground 08 December after losing power to its engines a day earlier. About 160,000 liters (40,000 gallons) of heavy fuel oil has escaped into the Bering Sea from the hull of the freighter that was cleaved in half in treacherous weather. Conservationists had at first said that up to 140,000 gallons of the ship's total stock of around 480,000 gallons (1.8 million liters) of viscous fuel oil had leaked around the ecologically-delicate area. But officials of the US Coast Guard and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, who are leading the fight against the slick, said only around 40,000 gallons of oil had escaped.
