US Treasury Department targeted by Chinese-backed cyber attack

The US Treasury Department was cyberattacked by a Chinese state-sponsored actor in early December. In the letter sent to Congress on the subject, the Ministry stated that it was determined that a "significant incident" had occurred. On December 8, the Department learned from third-party software service provider BeyondTrust that hackers had gained access to a cloud service used to provide remote technical support to end users of Treasury Department Offices.
