COATZACOALCOS, MEXICO: A workers of the state-owned Pemex oil company tries to remove oil from the Coatzacoalcos river, in the eastern coast state of Veracruz, 06 January 2005. Beaches and wildlife in eastern Mexico were mucked 22 December 2004 by oil after an explosion in a pumping station ruptured a pipeline, dumping 5,000 barrels of crude into a river that flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Strong winds and the river's current pushed oil into the gulf, 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the scene of the accident, as the Mexican navy together with Pemex are still cleaning up the affected beaches, removing sullied sand and plants.
