The world's first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 by the United States at the end of World War II, killing an estimated 70,000 people instantly. Three days later another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. With the effects of radiation, many thousands more dying over the following years and the number of the victims are thought to be approximately 340,000 people.
