Asylum Seekers Fill Tent Camps As Part Of U.S. “Remain In Mexico” Policy

MATAMOROS, MEXICO - DECEMBER 08: A mural stands near shelters known as macro tents, recently constructed by the Mexican government, which remain virtually unused at a camp for asylum seekers on December 08, 2019 in the border town of Matamoros, Mexico. More than 1,000 Central American and Mexican asylum seekers have been staying, many for months, in the squalid camp located next to the international bridge across the border from Brownsville, Texas. The Mexican government, which provided little humanitarian assistance to the camp in the past months, built the structures last week, although many of the immigrants are suspicious of the government's motives and have been reluctant to relocate their tents. Asylum seekers at the camp are now required by the U.S. government to stay in Mexico, many for months, as part of the Trump Administration's "Remain in Mexico" process for people legally seeking political asylum in the United States.
