SILVER SPRING, MD - MAY 16: A preserved human leg with elephantiasis on display at the new location of The National Museum of Health and Science in Silver Spring, MD on May 16, 2012. The leg was amputate in 1894 from a 27-year-old man who had elephantiasis for 12 years. Elephantiasis results from the combination of inflammation, scar tissue, and overall enlargement of surrounding tissues in response to a parasite. With the relocation of Walter Reed Hospital, the museum has found a new home on Linden Lane in Silver Spring, Maryland. Unlike it's old home at Walter Reed Hospital, the museum reopens making it more accessible for the general public. Among other things, the museum is famous for owning the bullet that killed President Lincoln, the amputated leg of Civil War Gen. Dan Sickles and other medical oddities.
