Taiwan Quake Death Toll Reaches 62 As Construction Probe Continues

TAINAN, TAIWAN - FEB. 11: As the death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck southern Taiwan on Saturday rose to 47 on Wednesday, authorities continued their probe into the possibility that construction flaws led to the deadly collapse of an apartment complex in the city of Tainan. The collapse exposed hollow cooking oil tin cans packed inside the concrete walls of the Weiguan Jinlong apartment complex, which had 16 floors above ground and one basement floor. Prosecutors suspect that the tin cans were used as building materials to fill some of the concrete pillars and walls of the 23-year-old building, located in the city's Yongkang District. Three former executives of a company that constructed the complex have been detained on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death. The former executives, whom the court ordered to be held incommunicado to prevent them from colluding with each other or destroying evidence, have denied during questioning that they used shoddy construction materials to build the complex, according to prosecutors. The magnitude 6.4 quake, which struck in the predawn hours of Saturday, also injured hundreds of people and toppled a number of other buildings in Tainan, a city of some 1.9 million people.
