Event Date(s): 06/18/2012 | Event Location(s): New York | Description: Graphic insert of “Marie Claire” magazine. Hall is joined by “Marie Claire” magazine Senior Fashion Editor Zanna Roberts Rassi live in the Today New York studio. TAMRON HALL reporting: This morning on TODAY'S STYLE, the inside scoop on what's hot and what's not in summer fashion. Zanna Roberts Rassi is the senior fashion editor for Marie Claire magazine and she's here with the editor's hot list. Good to see you. Good morning. Ms. ZANNA ROBERTS RASSI (Senior Fashion Editor, Marie Claire): Good to see you. How are you? HALL: I'm very good. So is there one overwhelming trend in all categories? Ms. RASSI: Well, there's an absolutely overwhelming ladylike theme running through. You know, last season we had the masculine look. HALL: Yeah. Ms. RASSI: And now it's much ladylike and elegant. HALL: OK. I like that. Let's start off with the handbag. Ms. RASSI: Good example. HALL: All women love a good bag. Ms. RASSI: Yes, we do. And this is a great example of the ladylike looks. It's something, you know, they've gone with the bigger bag, the top handle is very prevalent. Rassi displays handbags. HALL: OK. GFX: Supers “Fashion Summer Trends: Ladylike bags with handle on top, Aldo Stores $29.98-50.00”. Ms. RASSI: And this is something you can wear, obviously a day bag, but there's a smaller evening bag with a top handle as well on that. HALL: And can you rock this with jeans and then with a dress or are you limited to the girly look with this? Ms. RASSI: One hundred percent. No, I think you can totally rock it with a jean and it would be nice to juxtapose it with something a bit more rock 'n' roll. But we're seeing an end of the black leather handbags. HALL: OK. There's Eva Longoria with her bag looking beautiful. STILL: Insert photo of actress Eva Longoria with a handbag. Ms. RASSI: She looks great, yeah. HALL: She's got jeans on in that one. Ms. RASSI: Yeah, totally. HALL: OK. Moving onto eyewear, what's hot this summer? Ms. RASSI: Well, we're seeing the end of the big round glasses and we're going for the cat eye. There's a '50s look all on the runways from Prada to Louis Vuitton. Rassi displays sunglasses. HALL: OK. GFX: Supers “Fashion Summer Trends: Cat eye shades $9.95, hm.com”. Ms. RASSI: And this is a perfect little face-lift. It lifts the eye and it... HALL: Perfect little face-lift. Ms. RASSI: Yes. HALL: Love that description. Ms. RASSI: Quick cut to a skinny face. HALL: OK. And this look can work on any face shape? STILL: Insert photo of television personality Nicole Richie wearing cat eye sunglasses. Ms. RASSI: Absolutely. I think definitely... HALL: There's Nicole Richie. Ms. RASSI: Yes. HALL: Hers are still pretty big, but they have the cat eye proportion. Ms. RASSI: It's important to always remember to take them a little bit larger to the edge and never go with something too small because it will have the opposite effect. HALL: OK. All right. Let's move on to the color schemes that we have. Oh, you have lipsticks. Ms. RASSI: A little bit of beauty. Now it's about a nude face and super pop of lip, which I see you have here. HALL: So bright is right? Rassi displays lipsticks. Ms. RASSI: Bright is absolutely right. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: But go with a matte color as opposed to a shine. HALL: Not a shine. Why? Ms. RASSI: Mm-hmm. Just because it's much more relevant to the season. GFX: Supers “Fashion Summer Trends: Pastel separates $49.90-89.90, zara.com”. HALL: OK. And we've seen Rihanna with her bright lips and Blake Lively, as well, rocking that look. And they keep it pretty simple. STILL: Insert photo of singer Rihanna with bright lipstick. STILL: Insert photo of actress Blake Lively with bright lipstick. Ms. RASSI: Exactly. Everything else is very simple. The eyes are very simple. HALL: Yeah. Ms. RASSI: It's all about the loud mouth. HALL: All right. So keep everything else simple, pop the lip. Love it. Ms. RASSI: OK. HALL: Now we move on to clothes, my favorite thing in the world. And what's in? Ms. RASSI: We have pastel. HALL: Pastels. OK. GFX: Supers “Fashion Summer Trends: Pastel separates $49.90-89.90, zara.com”. Ms. RASSI: Both of us rocking it as well. Now it's a very sweet look that we've seen on the runways of Louis Vuitton and Prada. An easy way to keep it from going a little bit too girly is to stick with these more modern silhouettes. So we've got the cool pant, the cool jacket. Rassi displays pastel outfits. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: And it's good to mix colors together. Never more than two at once because it gets a little bit too sugar almondy. HALL: OK. And Cameron Diaz recently was spotted as well with lovely pastel outfit on. STILL: Insert photo of actress Cameron Diaz wearing a pastel outfit. Ms. RASSI: Mm-hmm. HALL: With a jacket. So two colors, no more. Ms. RASSI: No more. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: And you can rock it with a nice fresh white. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: Or even black leather, you know, something more evening like if you don't want to go too sweet and girly. HALL: All right. OK. Let's move on to footwear coming on over here. Ms. RASSI: Here we go. HALL: And Jennifer Aniston recently, it's an open-toed shoes and that's the style. Seems like logical. GFX: Supers “Fashion Summer Trends: Single sole strap open toe sandals”. Ms. RASSI: Yeah. The funny thing is that you're almost the extreme was the big platform. Rassi displays shoes. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: We went so far in one direction and now its gone straight back to the single. HALL: So platforms all that, not any good. OK. Ms. RASSI: Less of that and more of the single sole with the double strap. HALL: Oh, double strap. Ms. RASSI: Yeah. HALL: Now does that shorten or make your legs look skinnier? Ms. RASSI: It can occasionally make you, you know, if you've got the strap around the ankle. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: But then we also have an alternative option here. STILL: Insert photo of actress Jennifer Aniston on the red carpet. HALL: The high-heeled sneaker. Ms. RASSI: The high-heeled sneaker. HALL: Everyone is talking about this. Ms. RASSI: You know what the fun thing is about this? It's an alternative to a heel. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: The trick is to style it as you would a high heel, not as a sneaker. So wear it with a cute little dress. HALL: Oh, OK. Lindsay Lohan was recently seen sporting this with her, I guess, socks and a short skirt there. Is that a yes or a no way to do? STILL: Insert photo of actress Lindsay Lohan wearing high-heeled sneakers. Ms. RASSI: A little school girl, maybe a bit. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: It's very cute with a cute little pleated skirt or a fun little dress. HALL: Yes. And I love these, they're good to travel in and still look hip and cool. Ms. RASSI: Exactly. HALL: Let's move on to our denim look. Ms. RASSI: Uh-huh. HALL: You've got floral print on right now. Ms. RASSI: Floral print. HALL: Is this the style? Ms. RASSI: It is absolutely. Now it's all about bold bottoms. HALL: OK. GFX: Supers “Fashion Summer Trends: Printed floral denim $68.00, urbanoutfitters.com”. Ms. RASSI: And the thing is it's in every silhouette. So we have the wide palazzo pant, which is a silk, almost like a pajama pant. Rassi displays bottoms with bold prints. HALL: OK. Ms. RASSI: And then we have this skinnier jean. HALL: And Jessica Alba recently seen in the skinny version. STILL: Insert photo of actress Jessica Albam wearing pants with a bold print. Ms. RASSI: Mm-hmm. HALL: The wide leg version, which you mentioned, Rachel Bilson had it on as well. So skinny or flare, you're good. STILL: Photo of actress Rachel Bilson. Ms. RASSI: Yeah. There's a pant shape for every size. HALL: OK. And what's the key to the top? Solid, obviously. GFX: Supers “Fashion Summer Trends: White and black floral denim $59.90, zara.com”. Ms. RASSI: Solid. Solid color, yes, absolutely. Keep this neutral, solid to juxtapose against the busy bottom. HALL: Very nice. Now we know how to--we can stay in style. Thank you so much, Zanna, great pleasure having you on. Ms. RASSI: Thank you so much. Thanks.
