Mickey Mouse-themed bullet train hits the rails in Kyushu

FUKUOKA--Not only is Mickey Mouse the world's most famous mouse, he's now the fastest as well, even at age 90. A bullet train themed on the beloved Walt Disney Co. character is turning heads on the Kyushu Shinkansen Line. The special 800 Series Shinkansen featuring Mickey Mouse started its six-month run on May 17 between Hakata Station in Fukuoka and Kagoshima-Chuo Station in Kagoshima. About 170 passengers were all smiles while taking the inaugural ride at the invitation of Kyushu Railway Co. (JR Kyushu). The project was planned to mark the 90th anniversary of Mickey Mouse's first film appearance last year. “We want (passengers) to travel in the Kyushu region while being excited,” JR Kyushu President Toshihiko Aoyagi said during a ceremony at Hakata Station on May 17. Mickey Mouse ubiquitously appears inside the six-car train including each of the seats as well as adorning the exterior. On the upper portions of backrests of the seats are covers with printed hats with Mickey Mouse ears. Passengers took selfies while positioning their heads onto the ears. “It is cute that there are many Mickey Mouse-centered designs inside the cars,” said a pleased Harumi Ikegame, 49, who visited with her family. Passengers can take the Mickey Mouse Shinkansen with a regular ticket. The bullet train will continue to run between the stations through late November.
