Event Date(s): 01/01/2014 | Event Location(s): New York | Description: INT TODAY NEW YORK STUDIO AL ROKER: Okay, maybe 2014, but the ’80s are back, baby, with two big screen remakes. WILLIE GEIST: Yeah. You throw in some huge new albums, a little late night musical chairs, you’ve got the makings of one big year. NATALIE MORALES: And here with what to watch ad what to watch out for in the world of entertainment is Ramin Setoodeh, a senior editor at Variety. Ramin, happy New Year. Morales, Roker and Geist are joined by “Variety” magazine Senior Editor Ramin Setoodeh live in the Today New York studio. GFX: Insert still of the cover of “Variety” magazine. WILLIE GEIST: Happy New Year, Ramin. AL ROKER: Happy New Year. RAMIN SETOODEH (Senior Editor, Variety): Happy New Year, guys. NATALIE MORALES: Let’s get started with films. Because a lot to look forward and-- and then lot of remakes and-- and even, I guess, other movies that are coming out starting with X-Men: Days of the Future Past, it’s called. RAMIN SETOODEH: This premise is a little tricky. NATALIE MORALES: Yes. RAMIN SETOODEH: Through time travel there have been seven X-Men movies. NATALIE MORALES: Okay. RAMIN SETOODEH: Some were originals, some were prequels. GFX: Supers “‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’: Expected Release Date: May 23”. CLIPS: Brief cuts from the movie “X-Men: Days of Future Past”. AL ROKER: Right. RAMIN SETOODEH: But through time travel all the grown up X-Men reunite with their younger selves. So you have Ian McKellen, for example, and Michael Fassbender in the same movie. You have Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Halle Berry is back. NATALIE MORALES: I love. RAMIN SETOODEH: So all the X-Men characters are in this big X-Men movie. I think it will be one of the big movies of the summer. AL ROKER: That’s pretty cool. NATALIE MORALES: That is amazing. WILLIE GEIST: Very cool. AL ROKER: Wow. NATALIE MORALES: And that comes out May 23rd. RAMIN SETOODEH: Yes. NATALIE MORALES: So, fantastic. AL ROKER: Also in May we got Maleficent with Angelina Jolie. And kind of a family affair because their daughter Vivienne is also making her film debut. GFX: Supers “‘Maleficent’: Expected Release Date May 30”. CLIPS: Brief cuts from the movie “Maleficent”. RAMIN SETOODEH: She’s in it. She plays young Aurora. This is based on the Sleeping Beauty villain. And she plays younger Aurora and Elle Fanning plays Aurora when she is growing up. But it is her first dip into the acting waters, and Angelina Jolie looks really scary in it. AL ROKER: Yeah. RAMIN SETOODEH: I don’t know if very young children can go to this movie, but I think maybe older ones will really appreciate it. WILLIE GEIST: And then coming up in a little bit later in the year October, Gone Girl was a huge book couple summers ago. GFX: Supers “‘Gone Girl’: Expected Release Date: October 3”. AL ROKER: Oh, man. NATALIE MORALES: Oh, I loved that book. It was so good. WILLIE GEIST: And now we’re getting the movie. GFX: Insert still of the cover of the book “Gone Girl”. RAMIN SETOODEH: It was David Fincher directing the movie. And Rosamund Pike who has been in some movies. She was in Jack Reacher, and she had smaller role in An Education. She is the star, and Ben Affleck is the husband who may or may not have done something wrong. It’s a great thriller. So we’ll see how it’s adapted on to the big screen. NATALIE MORALES: I love it. It was such a good book. Okay. Catching Fire did huge numbers at the Box Office this past year. There’s another Hunger Games to look forward to as well. GFX: Supers “‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay’: Expected Release Date For Part One Is November 21, Part Two Is Slated For 2015”. RAMIN SETOODEH: We’re only eleven months away. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. RAMIN SETOODEH: Mark your calendars from the next Hunger Games, the third “Hunger Games.” WILLIE GEIST: Wow. NATALIE MORALES: Wow. Just eleven months away. CLIPS: Brief cuts from the movie “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay”. RAMIN SETOODEH: They-- they have taken the third book. AL ROKER: Mm-Hm. RAMIN SETOODEH: Because it is only three books. NATALIE MORALES: Right. RAMIN SETOODEH: And they have divided it like Harry Potter and Twilight did into two different movies. So the first movie comes out in November and the next one comes out in 2015. So we have lots of (unintelligible) coming out. AL ROKER: Lots of time. Lots of time. NATALIE MORALES: That’s good. WILLIE GEIST: Lots of great— NATALIE MORALES: Okay. AL ROKER: Robocop coming back. WILLIE GEIST: Yes. GFX: Supers “‘Robocop’: Expected Release Date: February 12”. AL ROKER: Robocop. RAMIN SETOODEH: Robocop is back. Started in 1987 in the classic movie. Joel Kinnaman from The Killing is actually playing Robocop. So we’ll see how he does. It’s an update. Hollywood as a mix track record— GFX: Split screen insert stills from “Robocop”. AL ROKER: Mm-Hm. RAMIN SETOODEH: --sometimes when they try to reboot these franchises. WILLIE GEIST: Yeah. RAMIN SETOODEH: But I think there are high hopes for this. AL ROKER: Is there any word would Peter Weller have a cameo in this, do you think? RAMIN SETOODEH: You know, I actually don’t know. Do you think he should? GFX: Insert still of actor Peter Weller. WILLIE GEIST: Yeah. (Cross talking) WILLIE GEIST: Let’s bring him back. Bring him back. NATALIE MORALES: Good. Bring him back. WILLIE GEIST: The originally is so good. AL ROKER: I know. RAMIN SETOODEH: What is Peter Weller doing? NATALIE MORALES: So good. RAMIN SETOODEH: Have you guys talked to him recently? AL ROKER: He does-- he does a lot of voice over. A lot of, like, cartoon voices. NATALIE MORALES: Doesn’t he? Wow. AL ROKER: He was just in a great remake, a Batman animated movie. NATALIE MORALES: Fantastic. RAMIN SETOODEH: How do you know that? NATALIE MORALES: He knows everything. AL ROKER: I watch a lot of animation and I look at the credits. NATALIE MORALES: He’s a man of useless— WILLIE GEIST: Al Roker. NATALIE MORALES: --useless knowledge. WILLIE GEIST: Robocop, February 12th. Later in the year, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. GFX: Supers “‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’: Expected Release Date: August 8”. RAMIN SETOODEH: I grew up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. NATALIE MORALES: Yes. WILLIE GEIST: Yes. Yes. RAMIN SETOODEH: They were big in the ‘80s. NATALIE MORALES: My kids’ loves these movies. RAMIN SETOODEH: There was a 1990 movie about them. And now they’re back in a live action version produced by Michael Bay. GFX: Insert still from “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. AL ROKER: Uh-Huh. RAMIN SETOODEH: He made up with Megan Fox, who, if you remember, he fired from Transformers. AL ROKER: Right. RAMIN SETOODEH: They’ve got into a little fight. NATALIE MORALES: Yes. RAMIN SETOODEH: And she plays April O’Neil. Can you guys – Al, let’s see how good you are. Can you name the turtles? Do you know their names? AL ROKER: Raphael, Donatello— NATALIE MORALES: Da Vinci. AL ROKER: --Michelangelo. NATALIE MORALES: Da Vinci. WILLIE GEIST: Leonardo. AL ROKER: Leonardo. RAMIN SETOODEH: Yes. NATALIE MORALES: I’m like Leonardo. Not da Vinci. AL ROKER: Yes. RAMIN SETOODEH: Raphael was the one with the red. AL ROKER: Right. WILLIE GEIST: And they like pizza, right?. AL ROKER: Yeah. RAMIN SETOODEH: And they love pizza and they live in the sewers. NATALIE MORALES: They do. AL ROKER: Now are they-- are they live or they’re CGI? RAMIN SETOODEH: There’s going to be CG-- it’s going to be-- she’s live. AL ROKER: A mix. RAMIN SETOODEH: And there it’s a mix of-- the two. AL ROKER: Because Megan has been really busy. So, you know, this is great for her. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. RAMIN SETOODEH: Busy doing what? NATALIE MORALES: She has been busy having babies. AL ROKER: Good for her. NATALIE MORALES: Okay. That’s good. WILLIE GEIST: Baby. NATALIE MORALES: Okay. Let’s move on to the small screen talking about TV. And we got a look forward to the Golden Globes coming up fairly— RAMIN SETOODEH: We do. Right. CLIPS: Brief cuts from the “Golden Globes” featuring actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. RAMIN SETOODEH: They are back hosting. NATALIE MORALES: They dynamic duo. RAMIN SETOODEH: They were so good last year I think a lot of people are very excited that they’re back for a second time. And I think it’s going to be a race between the two front-runners right now; are 12 Years a Slave, and American Hustle who both got seven nominations. So it will be interesting to see how those two get out throughout the award season. AL ROKER: Yeah. I mean, 12 Years a Slave everybody is kind of expecting. American Hustle, an amazing cast. But some people are kind of surprised that it’s done as well as it did. RAMIN SETOODEH: It’s having kind of a – you know, it is released later in the year and it’s having a surge now. And people, I think, now that they’ve seen it are enjoying it and they really like it. So it will be interesting. NATALIE MORALES: David R. Russell. He knows he’s got his hits, right. RAMIN SETOODEH: He’s having a really good track record. NATALIE MORALES: My gosh. AL ROKER: What a cast. WILLIE GEIST: And those-- those Golden Globes will tell us a lot about what happens at the Oscars a few weeks later. RAMIN SETOODEH: They’re like the Iowa Caucus of award season. WILLIE GEIST: Yes. NATALIE MORALES: Yes. WILLIE GEIST: Very good. Yes. GFX: Supers “The Oscars: Ellen DeGeneres Hosts The Academy Awards On March 2”. NATALIE MORALES: And we’ve got Ellen DeGeneres hosting this time around. RAMIN SETOODEH: She’s back too. WILLIE GEIST: Yeah. RAMIN SETOODEH: There’s all the women hosts this year. She is back hosting at the Oscarsa and— GFX: Insert still of actress Ellen DeGeneres. NATALIE MORALES: She was great, too. RAMIN SETOODEH: That’s in March. So she’s a good host. NATALIE MORALES: It’s the year of the ladies. AL ROKER: That’s right. NATALIE MORALES: We like that. AL ROKER: And so The Voice is back, sixth season. Who is in the coaches’ chair this time? AL ROKER: Yeah. NATALIE MORALES: I’m happy to see them both back. Great. WILLIE GEIST: And the show doesn’t lose much. AL ROKER: No. WILLIE GEIST: You think, oh, we’re losing that judge— NATALIE MORALES: No. WILLIE GEIST: --or this judge. AL ROKER: No. NATALIE MORALES: It’s different. WILLIE GEIST: That’s good. RAMIN SETOODEH: So unlike, you know, The Voice it’s good at shuffling around judges. Idol had a rough year last year with Nikki Minaj and Mariah Carey fighting, kind of. CLIPS: Brief cuts from the television show “American Idol”. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. WILLIE GEIST: Yeah. NATALIE MORALES: Kind of? No, very much so.
