Event Date(s): 10/11/2019 | Event Location(s): New York City, New York | Description: INT NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK STEPHANIE GOSK (00:10:41): This morning, Ronan Farrow alleged NBC News knew about sexual harassment complaints against Matt Lauer years before the anchor was fired, something executives at the company have consistently denied. STILLS Farrow Lauer RONAN FARROW (Good Morning America) (00:10:53): There was seven non-disclosure agreements, multiple ones of those, were with Matt Lauer accusers. This is years before this incident with Brooke Nevils and the firing. And I spoke to senior executives who were told about those earlier incidents. GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (Good Morning America) (00:11:07): With Matt Lauer? RONAN FARROW (00:11:08): Indeed. STEPHANIE GOSK (00:11:09): Today, Lauer's attorney responded. "In twenty-five years at NBC, Matt Lauer did not have a single complaint brought to his attention until November 28, 2017." In the book which was obtained by NBC News, Farrow describes four agreements with women who say they were harassed by the longtime TODAY Show host. At least two signed before Lauer was fired. Among them, a woman who had worked for the show for years. According to the book, she told colleagues that in 2010, Lauer "…exposed himself and propositioned her…," in his office after a work event. "He unzipped his pants and exposed his erect penis…" The woman who was named in the book recalled Lauer saying that he knew she wanted it… Then Farrow goes on to say, "he became angry saying, 'you're a tease. This is not good. You led me on." According to the book, the next day, she told former TODAY Show anchor Ann Curry who told "…two senior executives at the company that they needed to do something about Lauer." Curry quoted in the book, saying, "I told them that they had a problem in him. That he had a problem with women. That they had to keep an eye on him." A spokesperson from NBC Universal says Curry did not report a specific incident, but according to Farrow, no action was taken. The accuser left the company in 2013 and was given a six-figure sum in exchange for signing a release of rights on top of a standard NDA agreement. Lauer's attorney says they have not received a copy of the book, adding, "Matt never exposed himself to anyone. This ridiculous story has been shopped around for years. Many allegations that are being circulated were never raised during any fact-checking process." Describing a separate case, Farrow writes, "One on-air personality, who signed a nondisclosure agreement in 2012, said that NBC sought the deal after she showed colleagues messages that she took to be propositions, from both Lauer and one of the senior executives who later departed the company..." Farrow says the on-air talent never made a formal complaint because she had concerns over how it would be handled and then signed an NDA when she left the company. Farrow, who says he reviewed the document rights, the contract "waived the on-air personality's right to sue. It barred her from making negative statements about NBC-Universal, 'except as maybe required for bona fide news reporting."' An NBC Universal spokesperson says, "As we said a year ago, we have reviewed all available records and there is still no evidence of any claims or settlements related to Matt Lauer's misconduct that predate his firing. The few examples that Farrow cites with any detail involve employees who, by their own admission, made no formal complaint, and whose departures were completely routine…" The company says two agreements were reached with women who accused Lauer of sexual misconduct after his firing, including Brooke Nevils, who tells Farrow in the book that she was raped by Lauer during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. NBC News says she is free to tell her story, but Farrow writes that "NBC took the extraordinary step of having not only Nevils but also her lawyer and others close to her sign away their right to ever speak about the network," in exchange for a seven-figure sum. Lauer denied Nevil's accusation in a lengthy letter this week, writing in part, "…it is alleged that an extramarital, but consensual sexual encounter I have previously admitted having, was in fact an assault. It is categorically false, ignores the facts, and defies common sense."
