Event Date(s): 05/04/2019 | Event Location(s): Washington, District of Columbia | Description: EXT WASHINGTON, DC Live from the White House, KELLY O’DONNELL (07:09:57): Good morning, Sheinelle. Russia says that the United States initiated that call. The White House won’t say either way. But they will tell us that the President and Putin talked about North Korea just hours before that unexpected launch. They also talked about Russia’s influence in Venezuela and the possibility of some kind of updated nuclear weapons talks. But what they did not discuss really says a lot. MS: People voting with super imposed graphic of Putin MS: PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP (07:10:59): We didn’t discuss that. Really we didn’t discuss it. That’s up to our attorney general who I think has done a fantastic job. GFX: Graphics of Don McGahn MS: PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP (07:11:43): That will all be determined over the next week or so. GFX: Graphic of AG William Barr GFX: Graphic of deadline and Mueller report (End VT) GFX: Supers “Trump Touts Jobs Report: Economy Booms While President’s Approval Rating Remains Steady” PETER ALEXANDER (07:12:06): Kelly, of course the other domestic headline Friday, we got some new economic numbers that showed the economy is in great shape. More good news for the President. Unemployment at its lowest level in half a century. More than a hundred consecutive months of growth, dates back to 2010, President Obama’s first term, but you have this juxtaposition, this roaring economy on the one hand, then a norm busting President whose approval rating is still hovering just above forty percent. Isn’t this the dynamic that’s going to define the next eighteen months leading up to the 2020 election? GFX: Graphic of unemployment rate KELLY O’DONNELL (07:12:37): A good economy should be a glide path for a President’s reelection, but given all of the circumstances around this White House, and the impulsive and news making nature of this President, some of that good economic news gets easily overtaken by other events of the White House’s own making and things from the outside world, like we’re seeing in Venezuela or North Korea. The President will try to hammer home those good statistics. In year three he’s allowed to claim some credit for that, even though it certainly began during the Obama years. But there will be so many other issues that they will contest, and the President’s troubled numbers when it comes to his own approval really does set up a different dynamic, a good economy should be helpful, but there are these other questions about the President, it will be an underpinning of the 2020 campaign for sure. Peter. PETER ALEXANDER (07:13:25): The battle lines are certainly drawn. Kelly O’Donnell on the North Lawn. Kelly, good to see you. Thanks.
