Bogota mayor announces lifting of quarantine amid growing street protests

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - AUGUST 25: The Mayor of Bogota, Claudia Lopez, has announced the ending of a strict quarantine in Colombia's capital city from Thursday (Aug. 27). "Now, we have to enter a new stage, a new reality, in which we will continue to live with the virus, but we cannot continue in a life in which we only work or are at home. Part of life is also having the ability to socialize and learn to socialize in open spaces and outdoors, where there is less risk. We have to learn to socialize carefully, we have to keep working carefully," Lopez said. Colombia's capital city has been in lockdown for several months because of coronavirus. Protesters clashed with police in the streets In Bogota on Monday (August 24) calling for an end to the lockdown. The protesters were demanding the reopening of businesses and commerce to avoid more bankruptcy and hardship in the country.
