Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in 1492 standing among his crew aboard the Santa Maria with the distant view of an island on the horizon. Columbus called this North American island (in what is now the Bahamas) San Salvador, the natives called it Guanahani. La Santa María (La Gallega) was the largest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492.
