Congressman Connolly says local jurisdictions comply with federal immigration law, unable to act as agents

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Gerry Connolly of Virginia says opening a hearing with mayors of Chicago, Denver, Boston and New York City about sanctuary city policies that the state and local laws Republicans take issue with today comply fully with federal law and do not obstruct ICE from carrying out its duties while being backed by evidence showing they keep people safer as counties with laws that do not honor extraterritorial civil detainers have significantly lower levels of violent crime than counties that do while mayors police chiefs sheriffs and local leaders have made clear that combating violent crime requires allowing local police to focus on local public safety rather than acting as federal agents.
