Designed by the renowned Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva, the granite building, completed and officially inaugurated in 1916, features a distinct French Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical-inspired style. The station holds a fascinating history, having been constructed on the ruins of the 16th-century Convent of São Bento de Avé-Maria, which was demolished to make way for this symbol of 20th-century progress.
